Summary of Cult and Mind Control News:

But He Started it! South Park - UPDATE:  Tom Cruise got an episode of South Park, mocking him and other Scientologists, pulled from Comedy Central last March.  Now creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker are declaring their intent to strike back. Also, Isaac Hayes who plays the Chef quit the show citing religious “intolerance and bigotry” in the show. However, Stone and Parker believe Hayes’ Scientology faith has more to do with his leaving the show, given that he wasn’t upset with the show making fun of Christians.

Witchcraft - Witchcraft lawsuits clear court hurdle - Kane County (Illinois) Judge F. Keith Brown ruled that Kenneth Sutter and Deanna Whetstine could go ahead with their malpractice lawsuits against psychologist Letitia Libman and the Delnor-Community Hospital, for witchcraft and sexual misconduct.

However, Brown can still dismiss the lawsuits if Sutter and Whetstine cannot prove the allegations against Libman.  Four separate lawsuits cite Libman’s practices as having caused failed marriages, emotional instability and attempted suicide.  Libman says the problems were caused by the patients’ disorders.

Brown reversed his earlier ruling in spite of the fact that no medical expert had verified the allegations through medical records, as required by state law, but rather on the expert’s opinion alone.

Freemasonry - Members of the Freemasonry can hold public positions and not have to recuse themselves on matters concerning Masons.

Mr. Justice Newman said that Masons had to pay “due obedience” to the laws even thought they have pledged to give assistance to fellow Masons. He also noted, “Freemasonry is not a religion.”   The ruling came on a claim that the Mason’s secretive ways negatively influences politics. A recent decision by a North Dorset District Council allows farm land to be used as a showground by the Gillingham and Shaftbury Agricultural Society. Two members of the council who are Masons voted in favor of the application.

Aum Supreme Truth - Asahar’s children suffering for the actions of their father. The 12-year-old son of Shoko Asahar can’t get into the school of his choice. Asahar, leader of doomsday cult Aum Supreme Truth, was convicted and sentenced to death in 2004 for the Tokyo sarin nerve gas subway attack in1995.  Asahar’s daughter recently won her lawsuit in a similar case. Asahar’s daughters, Mayumi and Kaori Asahara, say their father, age 50, is “like a doll,” -- mentally ill, physically crippled -- and should not be executed.

FLDS - FLDS settle into South Dakota's Black Hills - Aerial photographs show large buildings and construction equipment on 100 acres located outside Pringle, South Dakota. The property has links to the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, whose prophet, Warren Jeffs, is a fugitive. Jeffs is wanted in Utah on charges of being an accessory to rape and in Arizona for his role in facilitating the sexual assault of a 16-year-old girl. He is also wanted on a federal charge of unlawful flight to avoid prosecution. Local residents have complained to local authorities about the noise and lights from construction work going on for a year.  No buildings are visible from the road, while the compound is surrounded with a barbed wire fence and “no trespassing” signs.

UUHHHH???? - Some parents of Stoney Brook University students  say their sons have been led astray by a cult leader. They say Aydogan Fuat is a Turkish Cypriot passing himself off as Islamic cleric spiritual leader, called Shaykh Abdul Kerim al-Kibrisi. Mr. Fuat's group Web site claims he is a deputy of Grandshaykh Muhammad Nazim, the spiritual leader of the worldwide Naqshbandi-Haqqani Sufi Order. Abdul Haqq, a spokesman for that order in North America, said Fuat is not one of their leaders and “has made his own group.”

Reactions from ex-group members and from University faculty are related in this New York Times article.

Raelian Movement - The Raelian Movement, which claims to have cloned 15 children, has moved into Brisbane, Australia, to recruit new members. The group has produced no proof of its cloned children. Journalist Claude Vorilhon, known as Rael, founded the group in 1973 and claims to have communicated with aliens, was scheduled to visit the city March 25. Saul O'Brien, a spokesman for the group, told reporters at Sunday Mail that the group's beliefs were being accepted by many people throughout Brisbane. The Catholic Church has denounced the group as a cult and issued a warning.

O’Brien said a Raelian float depicting the Pope as "the world's biggest homophobe" appeared in the annual Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras parade in Sydney.

Cannibalism - Two priests have been arrested for cannibalism. Two priests who follow an ancient Hindu cult, Brijvasi Mishra, 53, and his student Vishal Misra, 23, have been arrested for cannibalism. The men believed their act of eating the corpse of a child would give them supernatural powers. The men were arrested in the Jaupur district of northern Uttar Pradesh in India. The cult which uses human corpses in rituals was banned by the British in the 18th century.

Mormon Church - Native American Mormons not Lost Tribe - New DNA evidence traces the ancestry of Native North and South Americans from Asia.

This disputes the claims by the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter-day Saints that they were descended from a lost tribe of Israel.  The link between Israel and the American Indians and Polynesians has been used for proselytizing in Central and South American and in the South Pacific.

The Book of Mormon is said to be literal and without error. However, new scientific findings are prompting some in the church to reinterpret passages to coincide with the research. Others are expected to simple disregard the evidence as science’s challenge to their faith. Critics of the church want them to admit the error in their Scripture and apologize to the Indian converts. However, church officials are resisting

Recovery Success Story

Contributed by Rhona Johnson B.A. (Religious Studies) ECU West Australia.

I became involved with the Watchtower when my mother started a so called "Bible" study with a couple of J.W.s when I was about 15. I used to read their books and we went to one meeting. However, my father who was a Freemason was not interested and so the studies were stopped.

My mother went to the Anglican Church and I also went to the Sunday services until I left home at the age of 16 to study Art at a College. I had to cut short my studies when my parents divorced.

Years later when my sister and I were both married and expecting babies, my sister agreed to have a "Bible" study with two J.W.s and because I was lonely and home alone, I asked her to send them to study with me.   My husband at the time did not agree with their anti blood transfusion doctrine, as many members had died refusing blood thinking they were being disobedient to Jehovah.

We left S. Africa to emigrate to Australia in 1967. Two J.W.s were involved in a car accident and one of them died refusing a blood transfusion.  My husband decided to study the teaching for the next few months, found out that scriptures used to support their interpretation had been taken out of context and that they had become confused about the sacredness of blood and life. He wrote a tract and sent it to the WT. Headquarters. We received three letters and were told to wait on Jehovah, not to run ahead. We were then disfellowshipped for "starting a sect," which of course was totally false. My J.W. sister cut me out of her life and that was in 1968. She is now in her 70's and still will not contact me.

After we left the cult, I began to search for answers to the spiritual questions that we all ask, what is salvation, and where do you find it? If the WT did not have the so called "truth" as they claim, and if they are not the only true group in the world, then who does have "Truth"??? I went to the Library and read every book on every religion and belief system but was confused and could not find the answers to my questions. This went on for some years until I met an ex-Mormon, who became a friend. She had been helped by an evangelist, who showed her that we do not find salvation in any group or cult, but in a Person, who died to save us from our sins. She helped me to see the difference between Grace, and Works. In other words, working for a cult will bring bondage, but putting your faith in God will bring freedom.

I was then asked to work with a counter cult group for the next ten years. I then went to study for a B.A. in Religious Studies, learning about the four Major religions in the world and most of the new religious movements.  This enabled me to understand and deal with the many questions that I had about other belief systems. Since that time, I have been able to tell my story to many people in letters, tracts and also giving talks in churches to warn their members about the cults and the harm they can do to families who are broken due to the teachings and the shunning cruelty that is done in the name of their group. I have also been able to help many ex-J.W.s on websites who are in much emotional and spiritual pain after leaving or being shunned due to their involvement with a group or cult.

We, who have been through that pain, can identify with their suffering. Information is the key to helping people. If we had only known the real history of some of these groups, we would never have joined them. That is why websites such as FACTNet and others are vital in order to give out information and deal with the FACTS!!!! Facts cannot be denied, and Facts mean freedom!!! The more I learned about the cults, the more I became free of false teachings and the bondage of fear. They all use fear and shunning as a way of keeping their members. Once you can see the real facts and learn about the history of the group, you can set yourself free.

You may lose some of your so called "friends" and even members of your family, but you will be free to live a life of positive good, to help others and to make your life meaningful. Use your suffering to grow and become a strong and healthy person who can share your story to give others hope so that they too can survive and thrive in spite of their lost years in a group or cult. A sense of humour is a great gift, and it will keep you from becoming depressed and too serious.  It may take many years before you can see the funny side of your experiences, but when it happens, you will know you have overcome your fears and you will be a blessing to others.

This is my story and I hope it will be of some comfort and inspire others to be determined to grow into a stronger and more positive person.

Taking courses in assertiveness, personal development and other positive activities, sports, walking in the outdoors and just learning to gain the joy of living in freedom again will bring many benefits. I have been able to use my artistic gift in many ways: in art shows, painting murals, giving paintings to friends and also making friends, learning together to bring beauty into this world of confusion and conflict.

We can overcome in so many ways, emotionally, mentally and physically. Search for your own spiritual path, but never, ever join a group that does not allow you freedom to leave anytime you feel you need to. Always look at their history, and also at their "fruits."  Most of all look at the FACTS!!!!

MY LIFE—THEN AND NOW

By Brenda Lee, Author of Out of the Cocoon

I experienced quite a normal, joyful life until the age of nine, when my mother started studying with the Jehovah's Witnesses.  At first I, like her, thought it was fun to get some attention from these new people.  Since I had grown up on a very isolated farm in rural Pennsylvania, anything new coming our way was quite appealing.  After a while I realized how life altering this encounter would become.  My mom sat me down and in one giant swoop told me I would have to give up all the holidays, my friends, my birthday, and our relatives.  My life up until then had consisted of playing with my cousins from sunrise to sunset, so to say this was a disappointment is an understatement!  I obliged, as I had no choice.  Our congregation had no other children in it, so I literally had no JW friends growing up.  I call it my "nine-year grounding" sentence—for good behavior.

From the very onset, I questioned their beliefs, but still I was baptized at the age of ten because mom told me, "If you don't get baptized with us, you'll have to do it all by yourself later."  That was an intimidating, persuasive statement to a ten-year-old!  Shortly after baptism, I became determined to leave the religion someday.  (Little did I know that there is no escape from this religion.  You may escape physically, but you never escape emotionally.)

I zoned out during meeting (day-dreamt) so I could survive the long indoctrination sessions three times a week.  Sometimes I felt literally like I was pinned to an anthill—going out of my mind.  Additionally, I bit my nails until they bled to cope (after I left the organization, this self-induced maiming immediately ceased).  Journaling provided some relief util my sister showed it to my mother.  Once I realized my thoughts were being censored, I wrapped my diary in plastic and hid it in an old log in the forest.  Every time I felt the urge to "dump" my feelings, I went to the forest to write.  (I still have my journals today.)

Those nine years felt like a prison sentence.  At one point I wrote a story that graphically described the brutal murder of my parents.  I, a twelve-year old child, was the assassin.  Fortunately, I never intended to go through with my horrific fantasy, but purging my negatives feelings eased my pain of entrapment.  My mother was a very devout, strict JW and everything was followed to the letter.  It was my own common sense and complacency that kept the situation from becoming volatile.  I remember one session with two elders where they drilled me with scriptures for several hours because I made the simple comment, "I don't want to go to the Kingdom Hall."  I learned there was no independent thought within this controlling organization.

Every year became a countdown for me--7 years until I'm out, 5 years until I'm out, etc.  I also wrote a lot of poetry to relieve my frustrations.  I started an underground activity—writing to my aunt.  Mother forbid our correspondence, but I knew if I could gain a sympathetic ear, she may help me someday.  For several years we corresponded with each other via a classmate that I trusted.  My aunt would send her letter to my friend's house, my friend would bring it to school so I could reply, then mail my letter to my aunt.  None of my aunt's letters ever went home with me lest we be discovered.  Meanwhile, I did everything my mother said.  I was a good little JW.  I knew I had to bide my time and scheme and plot in order to escape.  My aunt was my link to the outside world.

Shortly after graduation, I rented a one-bedroom duplex with two other classmates.  I slept on the floor until my grandmother took pity on me and gave me a cot to use.  To financially survive, I started working in the fast-food industry about 20 hours a week.  That quickly dwindled to a few hours a week and I began to literally starve.  So I began eating other people's garbage to survive.  My mother, a loving JW, would make comments like, "We're going to your sister's house and I've baked some stew and homemade apple pies.  Too bad you can't come along."  Mother also told me when I left the organization, I'd become a prostitute and thief "now that Satan has taken hold of you."  To my credit, I never stole anything, nor did I sell my body to gain any financial advantage!  (Although in my opinion my brother has prostituted himself for the Watchtower.  At the organization's beckoning, he dropped out of his second year of college to become a full-time recruiter/elder.  Today he lives in poverty, unemployed, living off the kindness of our retired, elderly father.) Three months later I knew I was in desperate trouble but I managed to move to Colorado with a one-way plane ticket and $50 in my pocket.   I took out a student loan and put myself through college and graduated as the top student in my class.   Instead of becoming a victim, I became proactive in my quest to educate others about cults.  One of the ways I do this is through my free cult newsletter, available every month on my website.   I'll also be conducting an ongoing cult seminar through Colorado Free University in Denver, Colorado, beginning August 2006.

My life now is full of joy and happiness, a stark contrast to those years as a Witness.  I have a son who is my “new light.”  I look at him and realize how fortunate he is that his mother escaped.  If I hadn't, he wouldn't be here because I might have killed myself.  People sometimes ask me if I had it to do over, would I have stopped that elder from coming to my door (if I had had the power).  No, I wouldn’t.  Because of that experience, I’m a well-adjusted, hard-working, level-headed person who isn't afraid of life anymore.  My only regret is that I lost my family to this very divisive, "loving" religion.   However, I take solace in knowing that I'm not all alone in the world.  There are millions of people out there, just like me...survivors.

Good Books We Recommend

We’d like you to know about the new book, Captives of a Concept by Don Cameron. It helps the reader understand the illusionary concept that holds millions of Jehovah's Witnesses captive by controlling how they think and act without them realizing it. It offers some suggestions that avoid debating with Witnesses about what the Bible does or doesn't teach.

Here is a recent comment about the book on Amazon.com:

"Being involved in over 10 years of outreach ministry to Jehovah's Witnesses, I can honestly tell you that "Captives of a Concept" is a groundbreaking work. Don Cameron cuts right to the foundation of the control the Watchtower Bible & Tract Society has over its members and methodically and logically dismantles it in a way few (if any) authors have. His style is refreshing, his technique is clear and his tone is laden with the love of Christ.

"If you are looking for a casual read to educate yourself on Jehovah's Witnesses, this (and hundreds of other books) will suffice. If you're looking for a tool to help you reach one of God's lost children bound up in this cult, YOU NEED THIS BOOK." - Scott Peterson, Director of "Defending Your Doorstep Ministry."

Factnet Persons of the Quarter honors:

Each quarter Factnet honors individuals whose contributions to the study and exposure of mind control methods and destructive cults is exemplary and outstanding.

Steve Hassan and The Freedom of Mind Center

Steve Hassan, celebrating 30 years of this work, has been involved in educating the public about mind control and destructive cults since 1976. He is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC) in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and Nationally Certified Counselor (NCC). He holds a Masters degree in counseling psychology from Cambridge College.

He also wrote "Combatting Cult Mind Control: The #1 Best-selling Guide to Protection, Rescue, and Recovery from Destructive Cults" (1988) and "Releasing the Bonds: Empowering People to Think for Themselves" (2000). Both books have received extensive praise from former cult members, families of former members, clergy, cult experts, and psychologists; people from all walks of life interested in the problems that destructive cults pose for the world today.

Arnie Lerma and Lermanet.com

In Scientology's War against "Suppressive Persons," which the cult labels its victims and targets, Arnaldo Lerma is a super person, who has taken on the warring Scientologists in many battles on several fronts and who remains undefeated, undismayed and unsilenced.  Arnie got Scientology's number many years ago and he has helped countless other people get Scientology's number too through the years.  The website he built is an excellent resource with a wide range of materials that are used by millions of folks who are dealing with the Scientology problem.  His Scientology-related experiences, and making them available, are very valuable, and he has created a place that makes available the experiences of many others, which are also extremely valuable in this struggle. Lermanet is a treasure trove as well for Scientologists to discover about their religion and organization the treasures their leaders try to prevent them from discovering.  Hats off to Arnie for producing a wealth of work, taking a ton of torment for his trouble, having a heap of heart, and for lifting us all with a lot of laughs.

Special Award to Tom Cruise

Although Tom Cruise did not make Factnet’s Person of the Year for 2005, he is currently one of the top candidates for the 2006 award. This is due to his wild Scientology motivated attacks on other celebrities for using prescription drugs and his wild media blanket statements on not using prescription drugs. In addition to making himself out to be either a mindless Scientology puppet or some kind of a raving nut case, he has done a spectacular job of calling the worst type of massive world wide attention and bad publicity to the dangers and irrationality of Scientology. Keep up the great cult education Tom!

Factnet Service Success stories

“Oh My GAWD!!! Thank you so very much! I truly believe in "Free Speech" and I know you do too, but people who are ONLY on a message board to trash those trying to recover or [to] expose the very abuses these message boards were set up for, is something altogether different.

One of my brother's friends, years ago, told me: "Tory, there's an old Chinese saying: 'Watch where the feet go." I've said, re: the Internet, this same principle can be applied today: 'Watch where the keys go!"

You can follow certain people, and their pattern is one of abuse. Who needs that? We all know the drill. You'll get serious "Heat" from you-know-who, but now people can honestly tell their stories and be helped by FACTNet, vs. attacked.  Thank you for your courage.

Blessings, Tory

WEBSITE News:

What’s NEW this Month - Google Ads

Factnet is beginning new ways to fully fund itself beyond the traditional path of only member donations and grants. One of the new funding methods we are using and now refining is allowing appropriate or community value compatible advertising using Google Adsense ads as well as banner ads at various locations on our website and in our newsletters. With your help, we will have to continually filter these automatic ads to make sure only community value appropriate ads are displayed by the advertising companies that we are using.  Every time you click a Google Ad or search box on our website or in this ezine it helps support our mission and costs you nothing.

Share your Wisdom and Experiences in our Next Ezine

News from Factnet’s Management

Factnet is moving in or expanding in the following directions for 2006:

1.) Expanding our advisory group of Wise Elders in the cult and mind control education area. These individuals will be making more and more of the long term decisions on how Factnet should grow and achieve its mission.

2.) Expanding our volunteer group so we can continue to expand our services like personal referrals to professional exit counselors, lawyers, ministers or various denominations familiar with cult recover issues or security issues.

3.) Expanding our alliances and collaboration with other cult and mind control education non profit organizations around the world for better information and resource utilization and sharing.

4.) The distribution of considerable decision making to our volunteer and permanent staff to set and adjust monthly programs and administrative policy.

5.) Listening better to and adjusting better to the legitimate feedback from the tens of thousands of people who use Factnet each month.
