How do you handle trolls and other disruptive characters here?

To the mods:

Boy, I hate to sound thin-skinned and unwilling to bear with other people, because I am actually pretty broad minded to do that (I am a countercult worker and a Christian minister for many years) .. but within minutes after my pay to post transaction completed through PayPal, without any request for it, I had one rather antagonistic and obnoxious character - also claiming to be a minister - immediately send me a PM challenging me to a "investigation" of my belief system.

This intolerant character was told to buzz off -- I grapple with all kinds of religiously obsessed people often and I had no interest in becoming an audience to his rant, but it incenses me that such a loose cannon can be as grotesquely preachy as he wants to be here on this board. I realize in a community as large as this that there are always going to be disagreements and debates and contention is a way of life here at times. I've been on the Net and in this kind of countercult context for a long time, so I understand that. But at what point does moderation kick in and put these boys in time out to help them see that their hobby horse riding isn't helping or needed here? When do you reign these people in?
